Me, Myself, & My Shadow...

Is Netflix’s series concept House of Cards the future of television?

Have you watched the Netflix series House of Cards yet? I am thoroughly enjoying this series but even if the subject matter is not quite your cup of tea the concept of the all you can eat TV show is pretty cool and I think the future of television. Netflix released all 13 episodes of the series House Of Cards at once. There's been a lot of debate on whether this would be a good thing or not. It certainly goes against decades of television programming. You don't have quite the same water cooler effect as you would with a weekly TV show and might someone who's watched later episodes then you spoil the plot line? In my book, no pun intended, it's similar to releasing a novel.

Novels aren't released one chapter at a time and yet we managed to not spoil the ending for others who may not be at the same point in the story as we are. I think the House of Cards series is very much like a good novel. I might watch two episodes in one night or maybe have a marathon weekend were a watch five episodes in one fell swoop. Just like a good book where I might read several chapters in one night and maybe a week goes by where I'm too busy and then I catch up on the weekend reading several chapters at once. I still enjoy talking with other show enthusiasts about the plot line and if they're not quite as far as I am there is a little bit of excitement like "oh no you don't know what's in store for you..." and vice versa if they person I'm talking to is a little bit further in the series. I don't think having all the episodes out there detracts at all if the show was written and treated like a good novel as in my opinion House of Cards is doing. In fact I think it gives the freedom to produce each episode to the story-line and content rather than to a time-slot or a specific length. I urge you to watch a few episodes, if you're lucky enough to be a Netflix subscriber, and even if you don't enjoy the subject matter per se at least think about the concept that is happening here. I think we might just be seeing the future of television. Leave me a comment with your thoughts. I would enjoy reading your take on this new concept of television.
